When you enter the access number in your connection, you need to enter it the same way it would be dialed on a telephone. Consider the following when entering the access number:
Area Code Some regions require you to dial the area code when making a local call and some do not. If you need to dial the area code, include it when entering the number. If you do not need the area code, do not enter it.
Calling Waiting If you have call waiting, you will want to disable it while connected to the Internet. If you do not disable call waiting, you may be disconnected when someone tries to call you. To disable call waiting, enter the disable code (*70, 1170 or 70#) before the access number and follow it with a comma. For example: *70,555-1234. If you don't know which code to use, check with your local phone company. When you disconnect from the Internet, your call waiting feature will be automatically restored.
Extra Numbers If you are dialing out from a hotel or business office, you may need to dial an extra number to get an outside line. For example, in many hotels you will first have to dial a "9." When needed, enter the extra number(s) before the access number and follow it with a comma. For example: 9,555-1212.
A comma represents a pause. When you dial a 9 to get from an internal dial tone to an external dial tone, for example, you may need to pause the dialing for a few seconds until the external dial tone is ready. If you do not enter the comma, the telephone may not "hear the next couple of numbers being dialed, which would prevent you from connecting to the Internet.
If you are not sure how you need to dial a number from a particular location, first dial the access number using the telephone. Dial the access number in all possible combinations (with area code, without area code, etc.) and include any extra numbers that you need to first dial to get an outside line.
When you dial the number properly, you will hear the modem at the other end (sounds like a fax machine). Note the combination that you used to complete the call and set up your access number accordingly. If you do not hear the modem using any of the combinations above, contact Customer Support.
