Entering or Changing an Access Number

When you enter the access number in your connection, you need to enter it the same way it would be dialed on a telephone. Consider the following when entering the access number:

Why Would I Enter a Comma?

A comma represents a pause. When you dial a “9” to get from an internal dial tone to an external dial tone, for example, you may need to pause the dialing for a few seconds until the external dial tone is ready. If you do not enter the comma, the telephone may not "hear” the next couple of numbers being dialed, which would prevent you from connecting to the Internet.

Determining How to Enter the Access Number

If you are not sure how you need to dial a number from a particular location, first dial the access number using the telephone. Dial the access number in all possible combinations (with area code, without area code, etc.) and include any extra numbers that you need to first dial to get an outside line.

When you dial the number properly, you will hear the modem at the other end (sounds like a fax machine). Note the combination that you used to complete the call and set up your access number accordingly. If you do not hear the modem using any of the combinations above, contact Customer Support.
