To connect to the Internet, your computer must be connected to a working phone line. Do the following to connect to a phone line.
Using a standard telephone cable, plug one end into your computer. If you are using a desktop computer with an internal modem, plug the telephone cable into the back of the computer in the port called “line.”
Plug the other end of the telephone cable into a working phone jack in the wall. If you are not sure whether the phone jack has working service, plug a telephone into the jack and listen for the dial tone.
Do not plug into anything in between the phone jack and the computer, such as splitters, surge protectors, a fax machine, etc. Make sure the telephone cable goes directly from the computer to the phone jack in the wall.
If you are dialing out from a hotel room, plug the phone cable directly into the wall instead of using the data port in the telephone.
